If you’re new to keeping chickens, it may surprise you to know that they don’t like to sleep on the floor. Chickens need a place to roost, relax, and feel safe at night!
We recommend the following roosting materials:

Most chickens prefer to sleep on a roost rather than on the floor or in a nesting box. And trying to do the right thing, many backyard chicken keepers provide roosts in the form of broom handles or round bars.
What is best for chickens to roost on?
In the wild, chickens roost in trees. So to give them a natural experience, use wood. For small chicks I use smaller branches from one of our pine trees. It’s rough enough for them to grip properly.
Is it OK for chickens to sleep on the ground?
They are ground birds. Flat roosts (like a 2 x 4, wide side up) allow them to roost comfortably, and in cold weather, their toes stay covered and warm as they sleep. Third, if your birds are silkies, sometimes silkies just do prefer to sleep in a heap on the floor, snuggled together like puppies.
How do I protect my chickens at night?
Chickens can be trained to go inside a coop in the evening by feeding and watering them inside at dusk. Once the birds are inside, close and securely fasten all of the doors until the following morning. Solid sided coops are best because they prevent predators from reaching inside.
Do chickens need a ramp to their roost?
Ramps. For a few of our models, ramps are sometimes necessary to access roost space or bars. This is particularly true for bantam-sized birds as well as larger/heavier breeds. More often than not, regular-sized birds do just fine jumping on and off roost bars without a ramp.
Can you use 2×4 for chicken roost?

Inside a coop, place roosts eighteen inches or higher from the ground. Some breeds are better able to reach higher roosts and mounts may be placed as close as eighteen inches from the ceiling of the coop for larger or more agile breeds.

Most chicken owners report their chickens are happiest with a 2.5 to 4-inch wide roost. But you can go up to about 6 inches for a standard or larger size hen; just check their butts!

What do you put under a chicken roost?

How do you build a chicken ramp?
How to Build a Chicken Coop Ramp
- Cut the wooden slats so that they are the same width as the ramp.
- Calculate the ideal angle for your ramp then the space between the rungs or cleats.
- Use a generous amount of waterproof glue on the rungs and position them on the ramp.
- Wait for the glue to dry before proceeding.
How many nesting boxes do I need for 6 chickens?
A good rule of thumb is to provide one nesting box per 4-6 hens.
How many nesting boxes should I have for 8 chickens?
Usually, one nest box for every 4-5 hens is enough. It is not uncommon for all the hens to lay in one or two favorite nesting boxes, even when you’ve provided many other nesting options!
How far from the wall should a chicken roost be?
Set the roost at least 15 inches off the front and back walls to provide space. Plan for at least 10 inches of roosting space for each bird. Add several inches of additional space for extra large breeds and mature birds to reduce conflict and pecking.
Can chickens roost on PVC pipe?
Warnings. Don’t use PVC or metal pipe as roosting perches. Both are slippery and can cause injury to a chicken’s feet as she tries to maintain her balance. Metal pipes can grow cold enough in the winter to cause frostbite.
How many nesting boxes do I need for 10 chickens?
Experts recommend that you have one nesting box per five chickens. Best practices for animal welfare and husbandry recommend no more than three to four hens per nesting box. The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recommends no more than seven chickens share a nesting box.
