Are new skates already sharpened?
New hockey skates do not come sharpened. Not only are the skates not pre-sharpened, but the first sharpening is an important one. The bottoms of blades on new skates are flatter and rounded, so they need a hollow groove cut into them before they should be used.
How do you tell if skates have been sharpened?
We have found, time and again, that this simple test does a great job ensuring that a suitable edge is present on a skate blade. We recommend testing 3-5 spots up and down the blade on both the inside and outside edges. If you feel a little bite to your nail as you drag it across the edge – the edge is sharp.

If you can learn how to use a skate stone, you can properly sharpen your skates at home. Note that this isn’t so much a way of sharpening skates as it is a way to fine-tune things after you’ve made a couple passes on your blades using an appropriate machine.

Let them sit for 24 hours. The adhesives need to set again. If you absolutely have to, you could skate after a 12-hour cooling period, but that is not recommended.
