What wood is used for skateboard ramps?
CDX, ACX, Burch, particle board, etc. We recommend using any type of smooth and sanded plywood. Particle board is quite possibly the worst type of wood you could use! A halfpipe outdoors with plywood will need something such as Skatepaint to help protect the wood from rain/snow.
How long does it take to build a skate park?
This project will take between one to four years to complete, but the more preparation you put in now, the more efficient this project will come together.
What is the best surface for skateboarding?
There are three main options for the top surface:
- Skatelite – the best skating surface, they use this in the X games.
- Massonite – this is a tempered hardboard, it comes in 1/8″ and 1/4″ (use the 1/4″) and is only about $10 per sheet.
- Skate the plywood – you can stick with the 2 layers of plywood and skate that.

Can you skate on plywood?
You can build a deck out of lumberyard plywood, but it will suck. A skateboard is usually made from 7 plies of wood, but they are in no way comparable to a sheet of plywood.

Can skateboards go over rocks?
You can skateboard on rough roads if you have a deck with good concave and/or foot pockets, a sturdy and stable pair of trucks, and a set of larger, softer wheels that can roll over cracks and rocks.
Is it OK to skate on the road?
In general, no. Skateboarding in the street is usually not legal. On busy streets, it’s also not safe and a bad idea. Some cities do recommend that skateboards ride in the bike lane on the street.
Can you skate on rough roads?
As long as you aren’t skating old broken roads with big cracks or roads with lots of gravel, mud, sand or potholes, you are good to go with regular street wheels and rip hard. For skateparks or a similar smooth finish, we would definitely recommend street wheels.
