Carp will visit the shallower areas of water in winter as the suns rays will heat the water temperature more rapidly, they will also be found basking in the midday heat during summer in these same areas but will always stay close to the edge of the deeper water for safety.
What time of day are carp most active?
Carp are usually very active in the morning, especially during the warmer summer months. You will usually see carp swimming in the shallows and jumping throughout the pond or lake in the morning. What attracts carp the most?
Boilies are the go-to bait for most carp anglers. The scent of the fishmeal in the boilies drives carp wild. However, carp in frequently fished areas may associate boilies with danger and avoid that bait. Fortunately, there is a cheaper and easier bait that carp always strike at: sweet corn.
Where do carps hide?
Fallen trees in the water, areas covered in weed and stumps are things you have to pay extra attention to. Those areas offer carp safe shelter for them to rest in. They are also spots rich in natural food so carp really have everything they need there. But those are not always the best locations to fish at.
What smells are carp attracted to?
Snails, bloodworm and the huge range of other tiny invertebrates that the carp may feed upon will all release free amino acids and smells into the water column as they go about their lives. These amino acids and smells will then act like huge flashing signs to the carp drawing them in towards the grub!

How do you spot a carp in a lake?
Snags, overhanging trees and marginal areas are absolutely key and are great spots to find lurking carp. These areas provide the fish with protection from both predators and anglers, as most anglers will be put off by the prospect of casting towards snags as it can cause real problems.
Why do carp jump out of the water?
The main reason carp jump is to clear debris from their gills. When foraging for food, carp gulp sediment from the bottom and filter out the edible bits. During this process, some particles get lodged in their gills as they are expelled. A jump clears the gills of these particles.
