What’S The Difference Between Early And Maincrop Potatoes?

Early varieties are ready to harvest much sooner than maincrops and are what we call ‘new potatoes’. Maincrop varieties are in the ground a lot longer. They produce a larger harvest and bigger potatoes.

Do you plant early and maincrop potatoes at the same time?

One of the commonest questions we are asked is should all types of potatoes (maincrop, second earlies and first earlies) be planted at the same time? The answer is an absolutely yes! The difference between the types is not when they should be planted but how long they take from planting to harvest.

Can you eat Maincrop potatoes early?

Maincrop potatoes are usually ready in September but again you can wait until November to lift them or wait until just before the first frosts. It’s best to eat first and second earlies within a day or two of harvesting, although they can be kept up to about 7 days in a cool, dry and dark place.

Do Maincrop potatoes need Chitting?

We think you should definitely chit your first and second early varieties. For maincrop spuds, it’s less important, but still a good idea if you have time. Giving them a head start means you’re more likely to get an earlier and slightly improved harvest.

What happens if you harvest potatoes too early?

Dig potatoes too early, and you’ll harvest a measly crop of minuscule tubers. You’ll also risk stressing the plant and its precious root system, so although you could try replanting it, the plant might not thrive. Wait too long, and your potatoes may get damaged by frost, or begin to sprout, crack or rot underground.

Should seed potatoes be kept in the dark?

At Garden Organic we would advise putting your seed potatoes to chit in daylight. Having said that, if they are chitted in the dark, it is not the end of the world. Either way, it is important that they protected from frost.
